Shandiin Wood, MPH (Diné/Seminole) currently works as lead program evaluator for Tribal Practices for Wellness in Indian County (TPWIC), through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He previously worked at the NM Department of Health in multiple areas involving health equity and tribal health, in the Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention Program, Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Bureau, and Office of Policy and Accountability.

Current TPWIC challenges include identifying and validating indigenous methods of evaluation, creating culturally appropriate definitions and standards of programmatic success and progress in public health, integrating indigenous perspectives to assess predefined intermediate outcomes (e.g., measuring the degree to which a tribal member feels more connected, or pride regarding his/her tribe). The event will be an opportunity to discuss TPWIC’s opportunities and challenges, as well as implications for public health and indigenous communities at large.
